Your local Chamber of Commerce will almost
certainly have an Export Department. Among the services
this provides may be:
a library with a certain
amount of information about export markets
access to sources of
tendering opportunities, such as the European Journal
advice on customs,
shipping, etc
organisation of trade
missions to target countries. Participation in these is
often subsidised.

Also your local
Business Link will provide advice on a variety
of business issues including exporting. They may also be
able to provide some financial support for foreign language
promotional material such as video and multimedia through the Passport to Export (formerly
DTi Export Voucher) scheme. Conditions and availability
vary, but if your company is an SME, you may qualify for
a grant of up
to 50% of the cost.
Incidentally, yours can be a substantial business and still
qualify for assistance; an SME can have up to 250 employees
and around 50 million Euro turnover. Business Link can provide advice
in the area of e-commerce.
Nationally
The Department of Trade and
Industry has "Country Desks" which will provide you with
information about individual markets. They will also conduct
market research for you through the local British Embassy or
High Commission; much of this is subsidised. The dti also
operate an e-mail based service for relaying export
opportunities discovered by embassy staff; you can register
for this
here. What was Trade
Partners UK, incidentally, has now been rebranded UK Trade &
Investment.
You could also try your industry's trade or professional
association or the Institute of Export for advice. The
Institute's website is
